Derry student wins charity’s national video contest

University of Ulster student, Thomasina McCallion, has won a national video contest organised by Irish overseas development charity Trócaire. Thomasina.

The ‘1 om 6 Video’ contest was part of Trócaire’s campaign about the one billion people in the world who are living in hunger - that’s one in six of the entire population. The ‘1 in 6 Video Contest’ challenged people to express what this meant to them in a 90 second video.

The prize for the winner is the chance to travel overseas with Trócaire to see the agency’s work in the developing world first-hand.

“I can’t believe I’ve actually won and want to thank everyone who voted for my entry,” said Thomasina. “My video featured a dinner table with six people around it but only five of them were eating while the sixth sat with an empty plate representing the one in six hungry people in the world.”

Lawrence McBride, Trocaire’s regional development officer for the north-west, said, “I’m over the moon that Thomasina’s entry has come out on top. She was the only Ulster entrant to make it through to the final.

Dr Cahal McLaughlin, Thomasina’s tutor, added that the win is indicative of the high standard of student on the Media Studies and Production course.
